Bot reverts
[edit]Hi Jamesfour, I'm from Greek Wikipedia. First of all i'd like to thank you for protecting this wiki! I operate Egmontbot and i'd like some info on how to revert using it. The whole vandalism problem in Greek wiki is by one permanently blocked user and the only solution I think would be not to give him any attention (that's why I stopped reverting him instantly. Then I saw your bot reverts and thought that this would be a good solution. So if you could give me a helpful link or something i'd appreciate it. Best regards! --Egmontaz♤ talk 22:05, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
p.s. please answer on meta, not elwiki. --Egmontaz♤ talk 22:06, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hey Egmontaz, I agree I love that little trick to hide the vandalism when I roll it back. I'll be happy to explain how to do it unfortunately it only works with the markbotedits right which is given to admins (I have it as part of the Global Roll-backers group} and so you would have to ask a Crat or your community to grant you or your bot sysop status to be able to do it.
- The basic way is to add &bot=1 to the end of the url used to access a user's contributions. For example, http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=Jamesofur&bot=1. You can see the manual here. When doing it by hand you can use Javascript as well, for example Pathoschild has a great script called Ajax sysop tools here that among other things adds a checkbox on the contributions page to hide rolledback edits (if you have the right). It also adds a special button on that page that allows you to rollback without leaving the page (always helpful for mass attacks). Sorry for the somewhat long explanation feel free to let me know if you have any questions or need help :) Jamesofur 02:10, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you very much Jamesfour! I will try to find out :) --Egmontaz♤ talk 11:24, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for your advice James, I will try my best in the future and work as good as I can for the community. I will try to be a part of the SWMT group. Stay in touch! --Wikisidd 12:32, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
Your change at mr wiki
[edit]- Dear James , On 3rd Nov. 2009 I imported a sub tempalete en:Template:!) from en wiki to mr:साचा:!) .On our mr wiki template page you did place a {{delete|test page}} notice.
- First of all I would like to understand (because I do not have prograaming background) if there is any technical mistake in the template that made you think and decide that our template creation need to be deleted ?
- Actualy this template is imported as subtemplate part of German Languge wikipedia template de:Vorlage:Mentor which is imported and localised to Mr wiki needs.Template de:Vorlage:!) is in extensive use at German languge wikipedia where as english languge wikipedia has made less use of it are you aware of any technical reasons behind this ?
- If en:Template:!) is not an Ideal template what are the other alternative syntxes which we can use?
- Secondly Dear James while I apreceiate goodwork of SWMT group , We at mr wiki community has been self sufficient in routin patrol of mr wiki and mr wiktionary,(We would still need meta support to controll only inter wiki spammsters ,as and when that happens), We still need support of SWMT at our sister projects namely mr wikibooks ,and mr wikiquote ,We wish SWMT team avoid edits at mr wiki and mr wiktionary other than those to contorl interwiki spammsters.
- Please let me know how do I communicate about the same to other SWMT team members too .
Thanks and regards
Mahitgar 05:29, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Mahitgar, I appreciate you coming here to point this out to me. Looking at it again it appears that I made an obvious mistake. The template is so small that when I saw it created it seemed to be an empty page with just the dead link to documentation. I removed the tag and put some interwiki links in so that no one should make that mistake again. Unfortunately there isn't a spectacular place to contact the entire SWMT team easily though it may actually be a good idea to think about setting up a mailing list or something similar to allow that. For now I can definitely pass it along to both the other swmt members as well as the stewards we help so that we can keep in mind that your community is active enough to be able to handle most issues by themselves. Until we have a mailing list perhaps you could leave a note on talk:SWMT?. Please let me know if I can be of anymore help, and again thank you for the note and the kind words I always like to know where I've made a mistake so that I can change my actions and reflect on how to do better. Jamesofur 05:52, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
From Greek Wikiquotes: "Καλημέρα! Ευχαριστώ!"
[edit]Hi. Jamesofur! Because "your ability in other languages is rather small", I'd like to tell you that these two words in Greek mean "Good morning! Thank you!". It's my reaction for being there and protect our project, Greek Wikiquotes (or "Βικιφθέγματα") from vandalism, although we don't have such a problems, at least until now and hopefully in the future ("Fingers cross!"). Even if I became a permanent admin in Wikiquotes (probably because there is noone else...), I feel that I'm not very familiar with all the tools of Wiki projects, so your help will be quite helpful! Thanks, once again! --Seagull.Stefanos 10:05, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

re: vote on Global sysops/Vote
[edit]Oh, it's my fault. I've seen an announce somewhere in the english wikipedia saying "you're invited to vote..." and I assumed I was matching the requisites. Apparently I'm not, I apologize.
However, it's seems the italian language doesn't work, maybe there isn't an available translation? Ganondolf 02:04, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

I've done a few corrections to the translation, it should be ok now. Ganondolf 17:26, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you both! The more translations the better, always preferable to have someone translate it manually but we may want to do some machine translations, that way someone like Ganondolf who see's errors can fix them (i'll go publish it if it hasn't already.) I hope to see you around Ganondolf, if you reach the 150 edits before the end of the election please feel free to come back! James (T|C) 20:08, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Revert on vote page
[edit]I'm quite sure that reverting on a vote page should only be performed in case of vandalism. This is not that case, nor I see a notification to the user, who is active on several projects. If you think that his/her vote is not valid, you should strike it. --M/ 21:06, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Jamesofur, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.
A tip: add this page Meta:Administrators' discussion index to your watchlist, it tracks the latest activity to various sections of many of the important pages.
Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.
Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List_of_administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

why is Global sysops/Vote protected. 14 minutes before the protection, a non-sysop made a valid edit. There are many more similar edits which need to be made; should we use {{editprotected}}? John Vandenberg 02:50, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- Aye I let RT know as well that I thought it would be good if he kept going through and put on the talk page or on /validation and we could do it. I know Pathoschild is doing a summary but I'm pretty sure he isn't actually counting votes (and so is isn't looking at the eligibility as much). I know I'll be happy to go in and edit them and I'm sure others would do it as well. James (T C) 04:53, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Meeting
[edit]Hi all,
I'd like to have a meeting on IRC this week to discuss the 2010-2011 annual appeal/fundraiser. This will be an "anyone is welcome" type meeting, open to the broad community. During this, Zack Exley and I will take you through our inital thoughts about the fundraiser and its organization, and ask you to join us in a discussion about the (massive) role of volunteers and chapters in this year's fundraiser.
Because of the vagaries of time zones, scheduling live meetings is hard. So, we'll have a couple of potential times, and we'll log and post the meeting for anyone who wasn't able to make it.
The meetings will be held Thursday, 12 August at 23:00 UTC (16:00 PDT) and Friday, 13 August at 16:30 UTC (09:30 PDT) in the #wikimedia-fundraising channel on the freenode network on IRC (irc://irc.freenode.net/wikimedia-fundraising). You can access this using freenode's webclient, which is available at http://webchat.freenode.net/ or by using your favorite IRC client.
Hope to see you there! Philippe (WMF) 19:36, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

- I actually did some deletions and blocks on a local request a couple days ago on napWiki (http://nap.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Speci%C3%A0le:Registri&user=Jamesofur ) after a local user asked for some vandal help as well as a couple random deletions and blocks over the past couple months (mostly since March). I'm happy to set them aside if people would prefer it though I would like to keep them since they can be very useful both when wandering around the wikis and when I'm hanging out on IRC. I also fully intend to rejoin cvn-sw at some point in the near future while I hang out at work but haven't had the time yet to allow it. Thanks for the note though, I was wondering if someone would ask :) James (T C) 19:52, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

- So, I removed your GS access. Thank you for your work. Ruslik 07:35, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hey Ruslik, Thanks for the note and sorry for not getting back to you quick enough. With my work, and especially with the fundraiser, my GS use has obviously been few and far between (though I do think I've used it in the past 6 months mostly for some small changes trying to allow people to edit on small wikis with bad username blacklists and spam deletions). Part of me thinks that it would be nice to have an exemption for people who are on staff similar to what has been done at time for Stewards (For example when Cary and Guillaume didn't have time to do much normal steward work) but the decision is clearly up to you guys and not me :) . James (T C) 01:41, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
- This actually surprises me. I agree, James should have responded earlier. However: we remove tools to secure the wiki, and to prevent damage to the wiki. The inactivity guidelines are clearly written to avoid having tools resting with dormant accounts, thus making the tools subject to compromise. Is there any danger that James is actually dormant? I don't think anyone can seriously argue that. Precedent set in other groups (not specifically global sysops) is that the tools remain in the hands of staff who wish to keep them and don't misuse them. This is precedent so as to not discourage talented content contributors from taking Foundation jobs. While I obviously wouldn't attempt to impose my will on the global sysop team, I think this action need re-thinking and urge you to reconsider. Philippe (WMF) 01:46, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
- The relevant policy says: Global sysops will automatically lose their access if in six months they've not used the respective rights outside of wikis on which they have local rights. Global sysops are notified of this removal beforehand, and if they feel that they could still use the tools then they will retain them.. Since you did not answer for two weeks while logging in at least one time, I thought that you did not care. If you think that you still need tools I will return them. Ruslik 09:33, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
- If possible I'd prefer to keep them because I do come across times where they are helpful (and when I have a chance, especially after the fundraiser, I want to do a bit more active patrolling again as well). Sorry for the slow response, I obviously logged on but was rushing through and meant to come back with a less rushed response here. James (T C) 10:46, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I'm disappointed to see your comment about Nemo - [1]. I saw this after the vote closed and didn't have a chance to answer you directly. That was unfair, opportunistic and you voted based on your opinion of nemo than the issue in question, as other admins pointed out. How dare you suggest "Nemo constantly adds to the problems on this project"!! - coming from a WMF employee/contractor who made less than 50 edits since 2011 on Meta on his volunteer account??? I don't think you remotely have an idea how much work nemo does. He's not on anyone's payroll - he doesn't jump around between contracts, fellowships and job positions. He doesn't wait to take pot-shots at other admins or employees when another issue is brought up! He might be brazen like most of us, but he is frank with his opinions - if having those frank opinions about WMF or foundation activities are going to be a problem for the rest of us - I'd like to know now please, if you'll be waiting to vote against me or the next WMF critic based on your opinion of a "net positive to the meta community". His opinions of Xwiki projects, like outreach or strategy (I'm sure you were the founder and star contributor of those as well) are not alone. You seem to make a jump therein that he's the reason all of meta is bad and that anyone has a better chance of starting up a new wiki - how did that work out for those other wikis? All of this is your opinion, which is not in the majority, it's great that you chose the apt time to let your feelings be known and vote to remove his admin rights. We should all be proud. Notice of removal of adminship
[edit]Hello,
I regret to inform you that, in accordance with Meta:Administrators/Removal and as a result of your inactivity, administrator rights have been removed from your account. Please see Meta:Administrators/Removal/October 2014 for details. Kind regards, Barras talk 14:11, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Updated scripts
[edit]Hello Jamesofur. I edited your global.js to update you to the latest versions of my scripts (force ltr and ajax sysop); these now reside on the Wikimedia Tool Labs, which makes automatic updates easier. I also updated various deprecated functions. Let me know if anything breaks. :) —Pathoschild 03:20, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
Global CSS/JS migration
[edit]Hello Jamesofur. You have global scripts in User:Jamesofur/global.js, which you import using your local JS pages. Since August 2014, your global.js and global.css pages are loaded automatically on all wikis. Since you already import them yourself, you may experience script errors or tools being added twice. Do you want me to remove the global imports from your local pages using Synchbot (without changing any other content)? —Pathoschild 01:55, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hi again! I haven't heard back from you, so I'll assume you don't want to do this. Feel free to leave me a message or add a Synchbot request if you change your mind. :) —Pathoschild 16:56, 09 January 2016 (UTC)
This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.
As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.
An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.
The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that OTRS volunteers sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have been identified as an OTRS volunteer and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015, you will lose your OTRS access. OTRS volunteers have a specific agreement available, if you have recently signed the general confidentiality agreement for another role (such as CheckUser or Oversight), you do not need to sign the general agreement again, but you will still need to sign the OTRS agreement.
Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign
If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnumwikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain your OTRS access. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.
Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

[edit]I am a blocked user being stalked, and abused by multiple administrators who have
abused there powers, and think they own wikipedia, also somebody has blocked my e-mail
addresses, or my IP to wikipedia.org so i find it impossible to communicate with anybody
and even if i do get through or someone at wikipedia.org sends me an e-mail as Edward Galvez
did and i reply he will not get it, as he did not because i do not think he would ask
me a question not like the answer and not reply ???.
i do not think this is what wikipedia is all about, why would you publish your e-mail addresses
if you did not want to here from any body, the fondation board too. i need real HELP! here without
stalkers coming in on my conversions, i have been blocked on OTRS, and my talk page what
makes it impossible to appeal since every thing is based on notice boards.
