Design
My approach for the visual design of this site was to focus on simplicity with an emphasis on typography. It was inspired by Swiss style design, with large fonts front and center. I find large fonts to be aesthetic, and they add value for readability and accessibility. I use Commercial Type’s Graphik typeface throughout the site. It’s reminiscent of Helvetica, with a modern feel. The punctuation specifically gives a modern feel to this otherwise neo-grotesque typeface.
Animation
I’ve added simple animations with the goal of enhancing interactions and transitions. I wanted primary interactions to feel important with minimal disruption. I also wanted page transitions to feel smooth and satisfying, instead of abrupt.
Development
The HTML of this site is structurally semantic. This is mandatory for accessibility. It also adds a value to performance and maintainability. I hand-code with vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript because frameworks are bulky and unnecessary.
Tools/software
- Figma and my sketchbook for design
- Nova for markup
- Built/maintained with Middleman, Ghostty, Git, and Netlify
- Hemingway Editor to help with my inherent verbosity
Accessibility
Accessibility is and has always been front of mind for me. I aim for my site to be almost 100% accessible (validators aren’t absolute). Three color modes are available for visual sensitivities and personal preference: light, dark, and colorful. I accommodate reduced motion preferences and manually test keyboard-only navigation. The javascript features of this site as enhancements only. They do not inhibit access or functionality. Test suite:
- WAVE for validation
- Ratio for color contrast (my own app)
- Color Oracle for color blindness
- Apple VoiceOver for screen readers
Sustainability
Only 0.03g of CO2 is produced every time someone visits my site. This is cleaner than 98% of all websites, globally. The W3C’s Sustainable Web Design community group created the rating system. It comprises 94 recommendations.
Performance
I use proper image-compression and coding techniques for accessibility, sustainability, and page-speed performance:
- W3C-validated markup
- Perfect page-speed bench mark score of 100, for both desktop and mobile environments
