The Esports World Cup is a tournament series that was announced in late 2023, building off the previously established Gamers8 series. The tournament features competitions amongst games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, StarCraft II, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Honor of Kings, Free Fire, PUBG, PUBG Mobile, Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch 2, Fortnite, Rocket League, EA SPORTS FC, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, RENNSPORT, and Apex Legends. Per game, there are different ways of qualification for teams as the tournament is built into various circuits applicable to the games. Alongside the competitions in the games, there will also be a Club Competition for participating esports organizations that are a part of the Esports World Cup Club Program. The first edition will be held across July 2024, after which it will be an annual competition.

Formation of the Esports World Cup[edit]

On October 23rd, 2023 the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the launch of the Esports World Cup at the New Global Sport Conference in Riyadh. [1] The Esports World Cup will be an annual competition hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia starting in the Summer of 2024. Featuring tournaments in a line-up of various games and genres, the EWC additionally features a "Club Competition" for esports organizations to compete across multiple games. It was also announced that Ralf Reichert had left his role as the Chairman of the ESL FACEIT Group, and was appointed as the CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation. [2]

In a follow-up announcement, it was also clarified that the Esports World Cup was a rebranding of the previously hosted Gamers8 series that initially ran since 2022 in Riyadh as well. [3]

Esports World Cup Club Program[edit]

On February 1st, 2024 it was further announced that the Esports World Cup features a Club Program for esports organizations participating in the series. Starting for the first year there would be 28 organizations that are a part of the program. 22 of which had received a direct invitation, and six that were selected after an open application. [4]

Selected organizations are eligible for an annual six-figure payout to support their operations, also funding entrances into the featured titles at the Esports World Cup. The organizations also then compete for points through the final placements in each tournament featured at the Esports World Cup. Allowing them to win a to be announced part of the prize pool. [5]

Esports organizations applying through the open application first had to submit an application between February 1st and February 15th. From there on organizations were selected for a short-list to further the application process, after which they had to pitch their submission to the Esports World Club committee. [6]
