Summer is almost over, but let's celebrate the last of the season with a dot big bang game jam!
This is meant to be a relaxing and fun jam, so make your game as simple or complex as you like. Theme your game after anything that summer means to you. Warm sunshine, cool lakes, camping, hiking, school vacations, gardening, farmers markets, bike riding, summer storms, scuba diving, watermelon, fireworks, go karts, volleyball, water balloons, disc golf, fairs, the possibilities are endless!
When the jam is over, we will add all of the games to an event hub and do a stream to play through them. As a extra treat, we will also give out a special dot big bang avatar to everyone who participates :D
Wondering what dot big bang is?
dot big bang is a free browser based UGC platform that lets you make and share games with just a link! You don't need to download anything, the game editor and the voxel object editor are both in the browser. You can use no-code kits and templates if you are more of a designer/artist, or write your own code using TypeScript. There are lots of community made assets, or you can build your own voxel objects. The default games come with multiplayer examples and player templates that you can learn from and expand on.
1. Join the dot big bang Discord and give yourself the game jammer role.
2. Check out the dot big bang and dot big bang developer YouTube channels for playthroughs of the submissions, and video tutorials.
3. Explore the dot big bang documentation site to learn more about scripting and the technical side of things.
4. Start your game! There is an empty game template as well as some environments and kits on the new game page.
What kind of games can I submit?
Submissions must be made on dot big bang and marked "Published", with the URL submitted here on itch.io. You can optionally embed your game in the itch page to make it easier for people to play here on itch.
When can I submit my game? Can I keep working on it after submission?
You can submit the game any time before the deadline. Since this jam isn't judged, you are welcome to keep working on it after the deadline. But please have your game in a playable state at the end of the jam! We want to show off your work, but broken games will just frustrate players ;)
Can I use art/scripts/projects made by others on dot big bang?
Yes! Sharing scripts, voxel objects, and game prototypes is part of the heart and soul of dot big bang. One of the advantages of using a platform is that you start out with a ton of functionality, like a character controller, game kits, and Featured Templates. You can use any script or voxel object that is marked as shared, and modify and use any game, script, or voxel object that is marked as remixable. Just remember that people like to share & inspire, but not to be cloned, so make sure your final work feels uniquely yours.
Can I use assets or projects that I made previously?
Yes! Anything you have made previously is definitely fair game. Currently, you can't import voxel objects directly, so if you have voxel creations from other programs, you will need to recreate them in dot big bang.
Can I work with a team?
Yes! The creator of the game can share a link to their editing session so that teammates can edit the game together in real time. To find potential teammates, check out the dot big bang Discord. If you work with a team, please give us the dot big bang user names of all teammates on the submission so that we can give everyone the avatar prize!
Do I have to code to make a game?
Nope. There are several remixable game kits on the new game page that can be used to build a whole experience through customizing existing templates and setting properties on scripts. Swap the art, adjust the UI, change the environment, replace the dialog, add new enemies, alter the player movement, and even upload your own sounds to build you own distinct game.
