Seems to have been premiered during the 1892–1893 season of the Leipzig Gewandhaus (see Verwaltungsbericht des Rates der stadt Leipzig, XIII. Anstalten für Kunst, p.245 (list of works upcoming? during the 1892–93 season; "Gouvy (G-moll) (neu)".) (See preface: premiered by Reinecke on February 23rd '93.)

Appears twice in rapid succession (?) in NZM (Monatsbericht (1893), p.373 ; Monatsbericht (1894), p.58) - both full scores, same publisher, only apparent difference being the cover price and size (ottavo, 12 marks, for the former; 13.80 marks for the latter.)

Definitely "no. 6" rather than no.7 per MPH preface (unless the sinfonietta, originally intended to be a symphony, or the 1889 version of this symphony, stands in for no.6?). Also, more or less 1889/92 (two different dates for two different versions) rather than 1889-92 (span of time) for composition, one gathers from the cpo notes; some of the material (the scherzo) relates to an unpublished chamber work from 1887 (which has been recorded, on Phaia/K617 Music, 2003.)
