Technology@lemmy.world•Instagram boss: 16 hours of daily use is not addictionEnglish
24·1 day agoA system that benefits people who lie about objective facts should be destroyed.
If the tactical business decision is to look someone in the face and say “spending 2/3rds of a day, 16 whole hours, idly gazing at photos of anything is not an addiction” in order to protect business interests, then things are wrong. Addiction to a product should be met with horror! Oh no, how could this happen? Instead, it’s part of the business model.
“Business” is a blight.

3·2 days agoWell, I already have no credit, what with the poverty.
I think what the person you’re replying to was hinting at is the common understanding (at least among those with queer-awareness) of the difference between sexuality and romance.
A person could be asexual but still be in a romantic relationship that positively engages with Valentine’s Day.
I commisserate with your awful experience as a child, and that picking up the label of “asexual” probably simplifies the dialogue of explaining your situation. It sounds like your trauma affects you in ways that you are effectively asexual (and possibly aromantic). I’m not a mental health expert, just friends with queer people.
But people will be pedantic about this topic, unfortunately. You’re hitting a cross-heading of people that feel strongly about the specific definitions of these sexualities because of how much dis/misinformation there is from bad actors. There is also the reverse-reasoning that asexuality is because of something, like trauma, instead of a naturally-occuring sexuality.
I don’t write this to demean you, invalidate your experiences, or even to “teach” you, but to hopefully highlight a context from which you and some well-meaning person might align yourselves as opponents.

16·5 days agoI mean, there’s literally a job title called “investor”,
Why are we acting like investors are a good thing now? The platonic ideal of “an investor”, someone who seeds money and hovers hands-off to watch the investment grow, has been dead so long you could be forgiven for thinking it never even existed.
Maybe they don’t want a single revenue source to present undue influence on development. If their revenue is entirely supported by their premium model and they make a decision bad for the community, money dries up. You think Discord would be doing dumb shit like it is, if they weren’t floating off investors and whatever Palantir is throwing at them?
Of all the things to complain about, the fact that people can pay to have an animated avatar or screenshare in 4K (a resolution that a super-minority of people even have a monitor capable of rendering at) is baffling.
Yeah, the Rebellion we are shown through its heroes are not terrorists, they are a guerilla army. They don’t want to break the Empire through citizen revolt after sowing mass unrest; they make precision strikes on military infrastructure and assassinate critical Imperial officials.

1·5 days agoYou need to define “social media” because earlier you named “email” and “zoom” as examples of social media, which sounds entirely wrong. Is talking to people face to face social media too? Have you just conflated “social media” with “communication”?
And then you say social helped researchers communicate when working on cures? You want to posit that Facebook or Twitter or Snapchat were vital pathways of communication for virologists collaborating on vaccines?
