2024-03-04Remove unused #include's from backend .c filesPeter Eisentraut
as determined by include-what-you-use (IWYU) While IWYU also suggests to *add* a bunch of #include's (which is its main purpose), this patch does not do that. In some cases, a more specific #include replaces another less specific one. Some manual adjustments of the automatic result: - IWYU currently doesn't know about includes that provide global variable declarations (like -Wmissing-variable-declarations), so those includes are being kept manually. - All includes for port(ability) headers are being kept for now, to play it safe. - No changes of catalog/pg_foo.h to catalog/pg_foo_d.h, to keep the patch from exploding in size. Note that this patch touches just *.c files, so nothing declared in header files changes in hidden ways. As a small example, in src/backend/access/transam/rmgr.c, some IWYU pragma annotations are added to handle a special case there. 2018-02-17Allow tupleslots to have a fixed tupledesc, use in executor nodes.Andres Freund
The reason for doing so is that it will allow expression evaluation to optimize based on the underlying tupledesc. In particular it will allow to JIT tuple deforming together with the expression itself. For that expression initialization needs to be moved after the relevant slots are initialized - mostly unproblematic, except in the case of nodeWorktablescan.c. After doing so there's no need for ExecAssignResultType() and ExecAssignResultTypeFromTL() anymore, as all former callers have been converted to create a slot with a fixed descriptor. When creating a slot with a fixed descriptor, tts_values/isnull can be allocated together with the main slot, reducing allocation overhead and increasing cache density a bit. 2017-07-30Move ExecProcNode from dispatch to function pointer based model.Andres Freund
This allows us to add stack-depth checks the first time an executor node is called, and skip that overhead on following calls. Additionally it yields a nice speedup. While it'd probably have been a good idea to have that check all along, it has become more important after the new expression evaluation framework in b8d7f053c5c2bf2a7e - there's no stack depth check in common paths anymore now. We previously relied on ExecEvalExpr() being executed somewhere. We should move towards that model for further routines, but as this is required for v10, it seems better to only do the necessary (which already is quite large). 2011-09-22Make EXPLAIN ANALYZE report the numbers of rows rejected by filter steps.Tom Lane
This provides information about the numbers of tuples that were visited but not returned by table scans, as well as the numbers of join tuples that were considered and discarded within a join plan node. There is still some discussion going on about the best way to report counts for outer-join situations, but I think most of what's in the patch would not change if we revise that, so I'm going to go ahead and commit it as-is. Documentation changes to follow (they weren't in the submitted patch either). Marko Tiikkaja, reviewed by Marc Cousin, somewhat revised by Tom

2010-07-12Make NestLoop plan nodes pass outer-relation variables into their innerTom Lane
relation using the general PARAM_EXEC executor parameter mechanism, rather than the ad-hoc kluge of passing the outer tuple down through ExecReScan. The previous method was hard to understand and could never be extended to handle parameters coming from multiple join levels. This patch doesn't change the set of possible plans nor have any significant performance effect, but it's necessary infrastructure for future generalization of the concept of an inner indexscan plan. ExecReScan's second parameter is now unused, so it's removed.

2006-05-23Remove CXT_printf/CXT1_printf macros. If anyone had found them to be ofTom Lane
any use in the past many years, we'd have made some effort to include them in all executor node types; but in fact they were only in nodeAppend.c and nodeIndexscan.c, up until I copied nodeIndexscan.c's occurrence into the new bitmap node types. Remove some other unused macros in execdebug.h, too. Some day the whole header probably ought to go away in favor of better-designed facilities.

2006-02-28Extend the ExecInitNode API so that plan nodes receive a set of flagTom Lane
bits indicating which optional capabilities can actually be exercised at runtime. This will allow Sort and Material nodes, and perhaps later other nodes, to avoid unnecessary overhead in common cases. This commit just adds the infrastructure and arranges to pass the correct flag values down to plan nodes; none of the actual optimizations are here yet. I'm committing this separately in case anyone wants to measure the added overhead. (It should be negligible.) Simon Riggs and Tom Lane

2005-08-28Tweak nodeBitmapAnd to stop evaluating sub-plan scans if it finds it'sTom Lane
got an empty bitmap after any step; the remaining subplans can no longer affect the result. Per a suggestion from Ilia Kantor.
2005-04-20Minor performance improvement: avoid unnecessary creation/unioning ofTom Lane
bitmaps for multiple indexscans. Instead just let each indexscan add TIDs directly into the BitmapOr node's result bitmap.
2005-04-19Create executor and planner-backend support for decoupled heap and indexTom Lane
scans, using in-memory tuple ID bitmaps as the intermediary. The planner frontend (path creation and cost estimation) is not there yet, so none of this code can be executed. I have tested it using some hacked planner code that is far too ugly to see the light of day, however. Committing now so that the bulk of the infrastructure changes go in before the tree drifts under me.
