Change the columns attndims, attstattarget, and attinhcount from int32 to int16, and reorder a bit. This saves some space (currently 4 bytes) in pg_attribute and tuple descriptors, which translates into small performance benefits and/or room for new columns in pg_attribute needed by future features. attndims and attinhcount are never realistically used with values larger than int16. Just to be sure, add some overflow checks. attstattarget is currently limited explicitly to 10000. For consistency, pg_constraint.coninhcount is also changed like attinhcount. 2023-01-25Add eager and lazy freezing strategies to VACUUM.Peter Geoghegan
Eager freezing strategy avoids large build-ups of all-visible pages. It makes VACUUM trigger page-level freezing whenever doing so will enable the page to become all-frozen in the visibility map. This is useful for tables that experience continual growth, particularly strict append-only tables such as pgbench's history table. Eager freezing significantly improves performance stability by spreading out the cost of freezing over time, rather than doing most freezing during aggressive VACUUMs. It complements the insert autovacuum mechanism added by commit b07642db. VACUUM determines its freezing strategy based on the value of the new vacuum_freeze_strategy_threshold GUC (or reloption) with logged tables. Tables that exceed the size threshold use the eager freezing strategy. Unlogged tables and temp tables always use eager freezing strategy, since the added cost is negligible there. Non-permanent relations won't incur any extra overhead in WAL written (for the obvious reason), nor in pages dirtied (since any extra freezing will only take place on pages whose PD_ALL_VISIBLE bit needed to be set either way). VACUUM uses lazy freezing strategy for logged tables that fall under the GUC size threshold. Page-level freezing triggers based on the criteria established in commit 1de58df4, which added basic page-level freezing. Eager freezing is strictly more aggressive than lazy freezing. Settings like vacuum_freeze_min_age still get applied in just the same way in every VACUUM, independent of the strategy in use. The only mechanical difference between eager and lazy freezing strategies is that only the former applies its own additional criteria to trigger freezing pages. Note that even lazy freezing strategy will trigger freezing whenever a page happens to have required that an FPI be written during pruning, provided that the page will thereby become all-frozen in the visibility map afterwards (due to the FPI optimization from commit 1de58df4). The vacuum_freeze_strategy_threshold default setting is 4GB. This is a relatively low setting that prioritizes performance stability. It will be reviewed at the end of the Postgres 16 beta period. 2022-12-02Generalize ri_RootToPartitionMap to use for non-partition childrenAlvaro Herrera
ri_RootToPartitionMap is currently only initialized for tuple routing target partitions, though a future commit will need the ability to use it even for the non-partition child tables, so make adjustments to the decouple it from the partitioning code. Also, make it lazily initialized via ExecGetRootToChildMap(), making that function its preferred access path. Existing third-party code accessing it directly should no longer do so; consequently, it's been renamed to ri_RootToChildMap, which also makes it consistent with ri_ChildToRootMap. ExecGetRootToChildMap() houses the logic of setting the map appropriately depending on whether a given child relation is partition or not. To support this, also add a separate entry point for TupleConversionMap creation that receives an AttrMap. No new code here, just split an existing function in two. Instead of dozens of mostly-duplicate pg_foo_aclcheck() functions, write one common function object_aclcheck() that can handle almost all of them. We already have all the information we need, such as which system catalog corresponds to which catalog table and which column is the ACL column. There are a few pg_foo_aclcheck() that don't work via the generic function and have special APIs, so those stay as is. I also changed most pg_foo_aclmask() functions to static functions, since they are not used outside of aclchk.c. 2022-09-22meson: Add initial version of meson based build systemAndres Freund
Autoconf is showing its age, fewer and fewer contributors know how to wrangle it. Recursive make has a lot of hard to resolve dependency issues and slow incremental rebuilds. Our home-grown MSVC build system is hard to maintain for developers not using Windows and runs tests serially. While these and other issues could individually be addressed with incremental improvements, together they seem best addressed by moving to a more modern build system. After evaluating different build system choices, we chose to use meson, to a good degree based on the adoption by other open source projects. We decided that it's more realistic to commit a relatively early version of the new build system and mature it in tree. This commit adds an initial version of a meson based build system. It supports building postgres on at least AIX, FreeBSD, Linux, macOS, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris and Windows (however only gcc is supported on aix, solaris). For Windows/MSVC postgres can now be built with ninja (faster, particularly for incremental builds) and msbuild (supporting the visual studio GUI, but building slower). Several aspects (e.g. Windows rc file generation, PGXS compatibility, LLVM bitcode generation, documentation adjustments) are done in subsequent commits requiring further review. Other aspects (e.g. not installing test-only extensions) are not yet addressed. When building on Windows with msbuild, builds are slower when using a visual studio version older than 2019, because those versions do not support MultiToolTask, required by meson for intra-target parallelism. The plan is to remove the MSVC specific build system in src/tools/msvc soon after reaching feature parity. However, we're not planning to remove the autoconf/make build system in the near future. Likely we're going to keep at least the parts required for PGXS to keep working around until all supported versions build with meson. The two strings are already a single palloc'd chunk, not freed; there's no reason to allocate separate copies that have the same lifetime. This code is only called in short-lived memory contexts (except in some cases in TopTransactionContext, which is still short-lived enough not to really matter), and typically only for short arrays, so the memory or computation saved is likely negligible. However, let's fix it to avoid leaving a bad example of code to copy. This is the only place I could find where we're doing this with makeDefElem(). 2022-07-06Overload index_form_tuple to allow the memory context to be suppliedDavid Rowley
40af10b57 changed things so we make use of a generation memory context for storing tuples to be sorted by tuplesort.c. That change does not play nicely with the changes made in 9f03ca915 (back in 2014). That commit changed things so that index_form_tuple() is called while switched into the tuplestore's tuplecontext. In order to fetch the tuple from the index, index_form_tuple() must do various memory allocations which are unrelated to the storage of the final returned tuple. Although all of these allocations are pfree'd, the fact that we now use a generation context means that the memory for these pfree'd allocations won't be used again by any other allocation due to generation.c's lack of freelists. This could result in sorts used for building indexes exceeding maintenance_work_mem by a very large amount. Here we fix it so we no longer allocate anything apart from the tuple itself into the generation context by adding a new version of index_form_tuple named index_form_tuple_context, which can be called to specify the MemoryContext to allocate the tuple into. 2022-07-06Change internal RelFileNode references to RelFileNumber or RelFileLocator.Robert Haas
We have been using the term RelFileNode to refer to either (1) the integer that is used to name the sequence of files for a certain relation within the directory set aside for that tablespace/database combination; or (2) that value plus the OIDs of the tablespace and database; or occasionally (3) the whole series of files created for a relation based on those values. Using the same name for more than one thing is confusing. Replace RelFileNode with RelFileNumber when we're talking about just the single number, i.e. (1) from above, and with RelFileLocator when we're talking about all the things that are needed to locate a relation's files on disk, i.e. (2) from above. In the places where we refer to (3) as a relfilenode, instead refer to "relation storage". Since there is a ton of SQL code in the world that knows about pg_class.relfilenode, don't change the name of that column, or of other SQL-facing things that derive their name from it. On the other hand, do adjust closely-related internal terminology. For example, the structure member names dbNode and spcNode appear to be derived from the fact that the structure itself was called RelFileNode, so change those to dbOid and spcOid. Likewise, various variables with names like rnode and relnode get renamed appropriately, according to how they're being used in context. Hopefully, this is clearer than before. It is also preparation for future patches that intend to widen the relfilenumber fields from its current width of 32 bits. Variables that store a relfilenumber are now declared as type RelFileNumber rather than type Oid; right now, these are the same, but that can now more easily be changed. There were many calls to construct_array() and deconstruct_array() for built-in types, for example, when dealing with system catalog columns. These all hardcoded the type attributes necessary to pass to these functions. To simplify this a bit, add construct_array_builtin(), deconstruct_array_builtin() as wrappers that centralize this hardcoded knowledge. This simplifies many call sites and reduces the amount of hardcoded stuff that is spread around. 2022-03-22Add support for security invoker views.Dean Rasheed
A security invoker view checks permissions for accessing its underlying base relations using the privileges of the user of the view, rather than the privileges of the view owner. Additionally, if any of the base relations are tables with RLS enabled, the policies of the user of the view are applied, rather than those of the view owner. This allows views to be defined without giving away additional privileges on the underlying base relations, and matches a similar feature available in other database systems. It also allows views to operate more naturally with RLS, without affecting the assignments of policies to users. Christoph Heiss, with some additional hacking by me. Commit <FIXME> fixed the bug that RemoveTempRelationsCallback() did not push/register a snapshot. That only went unnoticed because often a valid catalog snapshot exists and is returned by GetOldestSnapshot(). But due to invalidation processing that is not reliable. Thus assert in init_toast_snapshot() that there is a registered or active snapshot, using the new HaveRegisteredOrActiveSnapshot(). 2021-12-08Fix corruption of toast indexes with REINDEX CONCURRENTLYMichael Paquier
REINDEX CONCURRENTLY run on a toast index or a toast relation could corrupt the target indexes rebuilt, as a backend running in parallel that manipulates toast values would directly release the lock on the toast relation when its local operation is done, rather than releasing the lock once the transaction that manipulated the toast values committed. The fix done here is simple: we now hold a ROW EXCLUSIVE lock on the toast relation when saving or deleting a toast value until the transaction working on them is committed, so as a concurrent reindex happening in parallel would be able to wait for any activity and see any new rows inserted (or deleted). An isolation test is added to check after the case fixed here, which is a bit fancy by design as it relies on allow_system_table_mods to rename the toast table and its index to fixed names. This way, it is possible to reindex them directly without any dependency on the OID of the underlying relation. Note that this could not use a DO block either, as REINDEX CONCURRENTLY cannot be run in a transaction block. The test is backpatched down to 13, where it is possible, thanks to c4a7a39, to use allow_system_table_mods in a test suite. There are some other issues as well. It's now too late in the cycle for nontrivial fixes, so we'll have to let Postgres 14 users continue to manually deal with ANALYZE their partitioned tables, and hopefully we can fix the issues for Postgres 15. I kept [most of] be280cdad298 ("Don't reset relhasindex for partitioned tables on ANALYZE") because while we added it due to 0827e8af70f4, it is a good bugfix in its own right, since it affects manual analyze as well as autovacuum-induced analyze, and there's no reason to revert it. I retained the addition of relkind 'p' to tables included by pg_stat_user_tables, because reverting that would require a catversion bump. Also, in pg14 only, I keep a struct member that was added to PgStat_TabStatEntry to avoid breaking compatibility with existing stat files. Backpatch to 14. Generalize the INDEX_CLEANUP VACUUM parameter (and the corresponding reloption): make it into a ternary style boolean parameter. It now exposes a third option, "auto". The "auto" option (which is now the default) enables the "bypass index vacuuming" optimization added by commit 1e55e7d1. "VACUUM (INDEX_CLEANUP TRUE)" is redefined to once again make VACUUM simply do any required index vacuuming, regardless of how few dead tuples are encountered during the first scan of the target heap relation (unless there are exactly zero). This gives users a way of opting out of the "bypass index vacuuming" optimization, if for whatever reason that proves necessary. It is also expected to be used by PostgreSQL developers as a testing option from time to time. "VACUUM (INDEX_CLEANUP FALSE)" does the same thing as it always has: it forcibly disables both index vacuuming and index cleanup. It's not expected to be used much in PostgreSQL 14. The failsafe mechanism added by commit 1e55e7d1 addresses the same problem in a simpler way. INDEX_CLEANUP can now be thought of as a testing and compatibility option. Redefine '\0' (InvalidCompressionMethod) as meaning "if we need to compress, use the current setting of default_toast_compression". This allows '\0' to be a suitable default choice regardless of datatype, greatly simplifying code paths that initialize tupledescs and the like. It seems like a more user-friendly approach as well, because now the default compression choice doesn't migrate into table definitions, meaning that changing default_toast_compression is usually sufficient to flip an installation's behavior; one needn't tediously issue per-column ALTER SET COMPRESSION commands. Along the way, fix a few minor bugs and documentation issues with the per-column-compression feature. Adopt more robust APIs for SetIndexStorageProperties and GetAttributeCompression. Bump catversion because typical contents of attcompression will now be different. We could get away without doing that, but it seems better to ensure v14 installations all agree on this. Now that attcompression is just a char, there's a lot of wasted padding space after it. Move it into the group of char-wide columns to save a net of 4 bytes per pg_attribute entry. While we're at it, swap the order of attstorage and attalign to make for a more logical grouping of these columns. Also re-order actions in related code to match the new field ordering. This patch also fixes one outright bug: equalTupleDescs() failed to compare attcompression. That could, for example, cause relcache reload to fail to adopt a new value following a change. 2021-05-20Avoid detoasting failure after COMMIT inside a plpgsql FOR loop.Tom Lane
exec_for_query() normally tries to prefetch a few rows at a time from the query being iterated over, so as to reduce executor entry/exit overhead. Unfortunately this is unsafe if we have COMMIT or ROLLBACK within the loop, because there might be TOAST references in the data that we prefetched but haven't yet examined. Immediately after the COMMIT/ROLLBACK, we have no snapshots in the session, meaning that VACUUM is at liberty to remove recently-deleted TOAST rows. This was originally reported as a case triggering the "no known snapshots" error in init_toast_snapshot(), but even if you miss hitting that, you can get "missing toast chunk", as illustrated by the added isolation test case. To fix, just disable prefetching in non-atomic contexts. Maybe there will be performance complaints prompting us to work harder later, but it's not clear at the moment that this really costs much, and I doubt we'd want to back-patch any complicated fix. In passing, adjust that error message in init_toast_snapshot() to be a little clearer about the likely cause of the problem. Patch by me, based on earlier investigation by Konstantin Knizhnik. Previously, autovacuum would completely ignore partitioned tables, which is not good regarding analyze -- failing to analyze those tables means poor plans may be chosen. Make autovacuum aware of those tables by propagating "changes since analyze" counts from the leaf partitions up the partitioning hierarchy. This also introduces necessary reloptions support for partitioned tables (autovacuum_enabled, autovacuum_analyze_scale_factor, autovacuum_analyze_threshold). It's unclear how best to document this aspect. Andrew Gierth reported that it's possible to crash the backend if no pg_attrdef record is found to match an attribute that has atthasdef set. AttrDefaultFetch warns about this situation, but then leaves behind a relation tupdesc that has null "adbin" pointer(s), which most places don't guard against. We considered promoting the warning to an error, but throwing errors during relcache load is pretty drastic: it effectively locks one out of using the relation at all. What seems better is to leave the load-time behavior as a warning, but then throw an error in any code path that wants to use a default and can't find it. This confines the error to a subset of INSERT/UPDATE operations on the table, and in particular will at least allow a pg_dump to succeed. Also, we should fix AttrDefaultFetch to not leave any null pointers in the tupdesc, because that just creates an untested bug hazard. While at it, apply the same philosophy of "warn at load, throw error only upon use of the known-missing info" to CHECK constraints. CheckConstraintFetch is very nearly the same logic as AttrDefaultFetch, but for reasons lost in the mists of time, it was throwing ERROR for the same cases that AttrDefaultFetch treats as WARNING. Make the two functions more nearly alike. In passing, get rid of potentially-O(N^2) loops in equalTupleDesc by making AttrDefaultFetch sort the entries after fetching them, so that equalTupleDesc can assume that entries in two equal tupdescs must be in matching order. (CheckConstraintFetch already was sorting CHECK constraints, but equalTupleDesc hadn't been told about it.) Change the default_toast_compression GUC to be an enum rather than a string. Earlier, uncommitted versions of the patch supported using CREATE ACCESS METHOD to add new compression methods to a running system, but that idea was dropped before commit. So, we can simplify the GUC handling as well, which has the nice side effect of improving the error messages. While updating the documentation to reflect the new GUC type, also move it back to the right place in the list. I moved this while revising what became commit 24f0e395ac5892cd12e8914646fe921fac5ba23d, but apparently the intended ordering is "alphabetical" rather than "whatever Robert thinks looks nice." Rejigger things to avoid having access/toast_compression.h depend on utils/guc.h, so that we don't end up with every file that includes it also depending on something largely unrelated. Move a few inline functions back into the C source file partly to help reduce dependencies and partly just to avoid clutter. A few very minor cosmetic fixes. substring(), and perhaps other callers, isn't careful to pass a slice length that is no more than the datum's true size. Since toast_decompress_datum_slice's children will palloc the requested slice length, this can waste memory. Also, close study of the liblz4 documentation suggests that it is dependent on the caller to not ask for more than the correct amount of decompressed data; this squares with observed misbehavior with liblz4 1.8.3. Avoid these problems by switching to the normal full-decompression code path if the slice request is >= datum's decompressed size. The authors of bbe0a81db hadn't quite got the idea that macros named like SOMETHING_4B_C were only meant for internal endianness-related details in postgres.h. Choose more legible names for macros that are intended to be used elsewhere. Rearrange postgres.h a bit to clarify the separation between those internal macros and ones intended for wider use. Also, avoid using the term "rawsize" for true decompressed size; we've used "extsize" for that, because "rawsize" generally denotes total Datum size including header. This choice seemed particularly unfortunate in tests that were comparing one of these meanings to the other. This patch includes a couple of not-purely-cosmetic changes: be sure that the shifts aligning compression methods are unsigned (not critical today, but will be when compression method 2 exists), and fix broken definition of VARATT_EXTERNAL_GET_COMPRESSION (now VARATT_EXTERNAL_GET_COMPRESS_METHOD), whose callers worked only accidentally.
