[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wīˀtei (“to chase”). Cognate with Latvian vît (“to subject”), Proto-Slavic *povinǫti (“to subordinate, subdue”) (whence Russian повинова́ться (povinovátʹsja, “to obey”), which was borrowed from Old Church Slavonic повинѫти (povinǫti, “to subject”)).[1]
