From Middle English uprist, opriste, from Old English *ūprist (uprising), from *upp (up) +‎ *ristiz (ascension, rise); equivalent to up- +‎ rist (a rising). Compare Old English ǣrist (rising, rising up, resurrection, awakening), Old High German urrist (resurrection), Gothic 𐌿𐍂𐍂𐌹𐍃𐍄𐍃 (urrists, resurrection).
