[edit]Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *úngnis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁n̥gʷnís. The expected reflex of Winter's Law would have been blocked by the cluster -nCn-, compare vanduõ (“water”). However, see Proto-Slavic *vygъňь (“forge, hearth”) < *ūˀgnis.[1]
