From Late Modern Swedish ugla, from Old Swedish uggla, from Old Norse ugla (compare Danish ugle, Icelandic ugla), from Proto-Germanic *uwwalǭ (compare English owl, Dutch uil, German Eule), diminutive of *uwwǭ (eagle-owl) (compare German Uhu), of imitative origin or a variant of *ūfaz, *ūfǭ (compare Swedish uv, Bavarian Auf), from Proto-Indo-European *up-. Feminine in Late Modern Swedish. Akin to English owl.
