Sino-Vietnamese word from 聖.

The informal adjectival sense "naive, credulous, gullible" likely semantically develops from sense "saintly" and thus parallels that of English silly, and the informal nominal sense "idiot, moron, simpleton" also likely semantically develops from sense "saint" and parallels that of French crétin; see those entries for semantic developments.
