Inherited from Old French tente, possibly from Vulgar Latin *tenta, from the feminine of tentus, perfect passive participle of tendō, or alternatively from Early Medieval Latin or Late Latin tenda, itself possibly a contraction of *tendita, feminine of a variant Vulgar Latin participle *tenditus (instead of tentus, perfect passive participle of Latin tendō). Compare Italian and Portuguese tenda; Spanish tienda.
