[edit]From Ecclesiastical Latin and Late Latin simonia (compare French simonie), after Simon Magus, who in Acts tries to buy from Peter the power to confer the Holy Spirit, from Hebrew שִׁמְעוֹן (Šimʻôn, “Simon”).
