[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)keh₁t- (“damage, harm”),[1] see also Ancient Greek ἀσκηθής (askēthḗs, “intact, safe, sound”, literally “without damage”), Proto-Germanic *skaþô.[2]
