[edit]From Middle English rene, rein (“strip of land forming a boundary; furrow; barrier; embankment”), from Old Norse rein (“a strip of land”), from Proto-Germanic *rainō, related to Icelandic rein, Old Danish rēn, German Rain (“narrow strip of land between two fields”).
