Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Russian моро́женое (moróženoje, “ice cream”).
Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /ˈmɑrosi/, [ˈmɑ̝ro̞s̠i]
- IPA(key): /ˈmɑroʃi/, [ˈmɑ̝ro̞ʃi]
- Rhymes: -ɑrosi
- Syllabification(key): ma‧ro‧si
Noun
[edit]- (Central Karelian Isthmus) ice cream
- Synonyms: see jäätelö
- 1942, “Niet Molotoff”, Tatu Pekkarinen, Robert von Essen (lyrics), Matti Jurva (music), performed by Matti Jurva and Kristalli-tanssiorkesteri:
- Finlandia, Finlandia, sinne taas matkalla oli Iivana; Kun Molotoffi lupas: "Juu kaikki harosii; huomenna jo Helsingissä syödään marosii"; Njet Molotoff, njet Molotoff, valehtelit enemmän kuin itse Bobrikov.
Usage notes
[edit]- The Karelian Isthmus was ceded to the Soviet Union after WWII and the population was transferred to other parts of Finland. As a result, the whole dialect is all but disappeared and this word is hardly known by current speakers. It is chiefly known through the WWII propaganda song cited above.
- In the quotation above, marosii is a dialectal spelling in partitive singular.
