[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *lattjan, from Proto-Germanic *latjaną, from Proto-Germanic *lataz (“slow, late”), equivalent to læt + -an. Cognate with Old Frisian letta, Old Saxon lettian, Old High German lezzen, Old Norse letja, Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (latjan).
