[edit]Etymology
[edit]From New Latin caryophyllus, from Ancient Greek καρυόφυλλον (karuóphullon), from κάρυον (káruon, “nut”) + φύλλον (phúllon, “leaf”); the definition is a phono-semantic adaptation from a Semitic language (compare Arabic قَرَنْفُل (qaranful)). Cognates include Italian garofano, French girofle, Greek γαρύφαλλο (garýfallo), Romanian calomfir (“costmary”).
