[edit]Possibly inherited from Proto-Philippine *gúlay, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *gulay;[1] or from Brunei Malay gulai, ultimately from Tamil குழை (kuḻai, “tender leaf; sprout; shoot; to become soft; pulpy; as well-cooked”). Compare Kapampangan gule, Bikol Central gulay, and Masbatenyo gulay.
Sense “very weak due to disease” is from parang gulay ang katawan. See also English vegetative.
