Etymology

[edit]

Perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *gʷerdʰ- (to sound), which appears to be related to *gʷerH- (to praise, recite); the suffix *dʰ- may be from *dʰeh₁- (to do, put, place). Cognate with Latvian dzirdēt; outside of Baltic, compare especially Old Armenian կարդամ (kardam, to shout, call).[1]

Verb

[edit]

girdė́ti (third-person present tense gir̃di, third-person past tense girdė́jo) [2]
