Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Albanian: *spukja,[1] either cognate with Latvian spèks (strength),[2] from Proto-Indo-European *speh₁- (to succeed, prosper) or Ancient Greek φῦσα (phûsa, breath; bellows), Old Armenian փուք (pʻukʻ, breath), Lithuanian pùsti (to swell), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pew- (to inflate).[1] Alternatively, from *fujqi,[3] borrowed from Vulgar Latin *fulcius, from Latin fulcīō (to prop up; to support; to make strong),[4]
