Etymology

From des- (un-) +‎ fir (thread) + -a (first-conjugation verbal suffix). Some Romanian etymological dictionaries list it as deriving from a local Vulgar Latin construction *disfīlāre[1](from dis- + fīlāre < fīlum), but this is unlikely, as normally it would become *diffīlāre in Latin.
