From Old Galician-Portuguese andorỹa (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from a Vulgar Latin root *harundina, from hirundina-, from Latin hirundō, hirundine; cf. also harundō, which may have influenced it. Cognate with Portuguese andorinha.
