[edit]From Proto-Brythonic *alarkos, from Proto-Celtic *eli- (compare Irish eala (“swan”)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁el- (compare Latin olor (“swan”), English auk, Old Swedish ala, alla (“long-tailed duck”), Hittite [script needed] (alilas)).
