Uncertain, probably from Greek μάλαμα (málama, gold), compare Aromanian malamã (gold), Megleno-Romanian amálomă (gold), Albanian malamë (gold). Possibly influenced by aur (gold) and aramă (copper). Compare also Italian lama (metal plate), Serbo-Croatian lama, lim.
