[edit]Etymology
[edit]Dialectal ad-on points to an original *adaʔún, wherein the middle vowel was elided regularly before a stressed syllable; the first element could be compared with Ilocano adda (“to have”), Malay ada (“to be, have”) and their cognate Cebuano word wala (“there is not”); suffixed with -on. The final "-a" is a common feature among the existential verbs adia, ania, anaa, atua.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]aduna (Badlit spelling ᜀᜇᜓᜈ)
- existential verb: there be; there is
- indicates possession: to have
- adunay sakyanan si Maria
- Maria has a personal vehicle
Usage notes
[edit]- If the subject is indefinite, the indefinite marker -y is suffixed; otherwise, the bare form is used.
- adunay lalaki ― a man is present (indefinite subject)
- aduna ang lalaki ― the man is present (definite subject)
- In colloquial language, anaa (naa) has met more frequent usage than aduna to mean "there is; to have"
