[edit]From Middle High German zarge (“side wall, frame, embankment”), from Old High German zarga (“rim, side wall”), from Proto-West Germanic *targā, from Proto-Germanic *targǭ (“edge”), from Proto-Indo-European *derǵʰ- (“to catch, grasp”). Akin to Old Norse targa (“small shield”). More at targe.
