English
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Dutch Woensdrecht.
Proper noun
[edit]Woensdrecht
- A village and municipality of North Brabant, Netherlands.
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as wunsdrecht in 1249. Compound of an unclear first element and -drecht (“ferry, watercourse”), viz. The first element may be Old Dutch Wodo (a personal name), Old Dutch Wunno (a personal name) or Old Dutch Woden (a personal name).
It is not probable that the first element derives from Woen (“Odin”), as the names of pagan deities never appear in Dutch compounds with words such as -drecht or veer (compare English Wensley). Compare Woensel; also compare Barendrecht, Duivendrecht and Papendrecht.
