Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Apisite (talk) 21:25, 14 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm currently getting myself familiar with the editing of the english speaking wiktionary, so sorry for any mistakes that might occur and thanks for fixing them right away. Sprochgung (talk) 21:33, 14 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Edit summary for new entries

[edit]

Hi. You don't need to write "new" in that box. If you leave it blank, it will just show the page content instead (which is actually more useful). Thanks. Equinox 00:05, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'll keep that in mind. Thank you. Sprochgung (talk) 00:08, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Translating Hymns by Plethon

[edit]

What do you think of the idea of translating the hymns by Plethon into German or any other traditional European language? Apisite (talk) 22:08, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

I would probably consider it if I could know Greek, but unfortunately I don't. If you, or another user, would attempt it then I would be happy to help by correcting possible grammar mistakes. Sprochgung (talk) 22:50, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Language codes in etymology templates

[edit]

In case you weren't aware: for any template such as {{inh}}, {{bor}}, or {{der}} that takes 2 language codes, the first one is always the language of the entry. If you put {{inh|de|goh|...}} in an East Central German/Erzgebirgisch entry, you're really saying that the term is German (that is,Schriftdeutsch), not ECG, and the entry goes in Category:German terms inherited from Old High German, not in Category:East Central German terms inherited from Old High German. It eventually ends up in Wiktionary:Todo/Lists/Derivation category does not match entry language, and someone like me has to clean it up. Please make sure to get this right in the future. Thanks! Thanks for pointing out this mistake. It's a copy error that happens from time to time. I will try to keep an eye on it. Sprochgung (talk) 03:55, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
