Welcome

[edit]

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!--Dvortygirl 05:14, 16 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

becouse

[edit]

Hello,

Sorry, but I deleted becouse as it is Wiktionary's practice to not enter redirects for misspellings. I don't know offhand if that misspelling is common enough to justify replacing a "Common misspelling of because" entry there.

I must say, I am enjoying your contributions. I hope you can keep them rolling in.

--Connel MacKenzie 17:34, 24 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

[edit]

Jaaari, I just wanted to say thank you for all your contributions. I haven't paid that much attention lately, but I just looked and there you were, quietly adding much-needed translations, everywhere. Keep up the good work.

I'm curious, too: is there any word with three a's in it, even in Finnish? Does your name have some meaning? (The story, if there is one worth sharing, would be an excellent thing to put on that red-linked user page of yours.) --Dvortygirl 16:49, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the cheer up ^^.
As for my name, it is derived from a Finnish name, Jari. My real name isn't Jari and I have no idea why on earth I have chosen such a nickname. However it is a good one in the sense that it's quite unique - in fact I have never encountered a namesake. Jaaari 17:22, 2 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Translations in the wrong place

[edit]

Hi,

Well done for spotting the wrongly placed translations in Velo and Hund. I hope you are able to track down many more. Are you transferring these to the respective English words before deleting them? — Paul G 12:08, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I am transferring the translations, so no information is lost. In the cases of Velo and Hund all translations were already in the English article. --Jaaari 13:45, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Check Finnish?

[edit]

Jaaari, Could I trouble you to have a look at this entry (warning: probably vulgar) and confirm its accuracy? I know no Finnish, and this is precisely the sort of anonymous edit that could stand review. Thanks! —Dvortygirl 08:25, 20 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yep, it's accurate.--Jaaari 08:53, 20 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to contribute

[edit]

Hi,

You might or might not already be aware that there is now a new system in place for marking translations that need to be checked (those that are suspected of being incorrect or those where it is not clear which sense(s) of a word the translations apply to). (See here for the Beer parlour discussion on this topic.)

Translations to be checked are now categorised by language. For example, Category:Translations_to_be_checked_(French) contains a list of all words where French translations need to be checked. This is designed to make the checking of these translations easier to maintain and work with.

I'm contacting everyone who has either expressed an interest in working on translations or has indicated in Wiktionary:Babel that they have a good knowledge of a particular foreign language or languages.

Would you be interested in helping out with the translations to be checked for Finnish? If so, please read the page on how to check translations.

If you want to reply to this message, please do so on my talk page. Thanks for your help you can provide.

Months and Days

[edit]

Hi, Jaaari. Would you mind having a look at the Appendices for Appendix:Months of the Year and Appendix:Days of the Week and be sure that both pages include the appropriate FI entries? Also, some of these basic entries may be missing from Wiktionary. Kappa has already helped to created the Korean ones, and I'll be looking for others to help in additional languages. Thanks for whatever help you can provide. --EncycloPetey 09:32, 29 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I updated Appendix:Months of the Year and Appendix:Days of the Week seems fine to me. --Jaaari 16:00, 29 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! --EncycloPetey 16:01, 29 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Category:English nouns

[edit]

Hi again. I notice you're ading the category "English nouns" to pages. There's a current discussion in the Beer Parlour (titled: Categories of the form <language>:<part of speech>) that favours not using this anymore since the category has grown too large to be useful. --EncycloPetey 16:12, 29 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I'll cease adding the categories in question. --Jaaari 16:29, 29 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Units of Time

[edit]

Hello again, and thanks for filling in the Finnish months of the year! It's so nice to see this information finally showing up on Wiktionary. Second, could you help fill in the Finnish information on Appendix:Units of time? If you know of people who could help fill in more languages, that would be great! --EncycloPetey 12:09, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Done :) --Jaaari 06:14, 4 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so much! --EncycloPetey 09:57, 4 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

User:Drago

[edit]

Hi Jaaari. Can you have a quick look at User:Drago's Finnish contributions? Drago adds lots of foreign entries, and it seems to me that most of the native speakers of the languages he adds entries for have eventually told him he's doing them all wrong, so he goes and adds entries from more obscure languages (Sorry to call Suomi obscure, by the way) ;). ). Are Drago's Finnish entries OK? --Newnoise (Shout louder) 14:11, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I couldn't spot any outright translation errors. I can't say much about the etymologies, though. --Jaaari 15:01, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

{{rfc-trans}}

[edit]

Thank you so much for attacking these!

In another day, you'll have been contributing here for a year! Would you mind if I nominated you on WT:A? You would be our first 'fi' speaking sysop,

--Connel MacKenzie 09:57, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I actually made a PHP script that creates appropriate translation tables, populates them with translations that have their meanings in parenthesis and throws the rest under {{checktrans}}. Without this tool the converting process would take me 15-30 minutes per word :S
I don't object being nominated for SysOp.
You would be our first 'fi' speaking sysop
We have User:Aulis Eskola, don't we?
--Jaaari 15:03, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Aulis is an admin (not very active, though). In the meanwhile, you have been nominated. Please state that you accept (or don't accept) this. — Vildricianus 08:44, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sysopship

[edit]

You are now a sysop - congratulations! Please contact any of the others at WT:A if you need any help or guidance in your new role. — Paul G 16:49, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

PS: Could you please confirm on my user page that your time zone is UTC+2. Thank you. — Paul G 16:53, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, will do. :)--Jaaari 17:35, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

User preferences

[edit]

Now that you're a sysop, please change your Special:Preferences to mark all edits as patrolled, by default. Thank you! Congrats again! --Connel MacKenzie 06:55, 22 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Done.--Jaaari 06:58, 22 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Finnish for parrot

[edit]

Would you please check the Finnish translation(s) for parrot, and could you create the entries? This is one of my selected model pages, to serve as an example of what a full page should look like. In other words, the entry and linked pages should be as fully done as possible to show others what we're trying to achieve. Thanks. --EncycloPetey 16:10, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I couldn't think of other apt translations than parrot<->papukaija so i just created the entry for papukaija. --Jaaari 16:30, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. --EncycloPetey 16:31, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Plurals

[edit]

Terve, pläräsin hakusanalla "Finnish" läpi luokittelemattomia suomen sanoja ja vastaan tuli jonkun verran monikkomuotoja substantiiveista. En nyt laskenut, mutta joissain tekemissäsi sivuissa oli pelkkä {{plural of|sana} }, ja se ohjaa suoraan luokkaan "English plurals". Eli muistathan laittaa sen muotoon {{plural of|sana|lang=Finnish} } niin menee oikeaan luokkaan. :) -- Frous 05:05, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Juu kyllä mä oon laittanu siitä lähtien kun huomasin.--Jaaari 12:43, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wheee

[edit]

That was a fun series of edit conflicts. I thought I was edit-conflicting with myself (page move in separate tab.) Is the entry OK now? --Connel MacKenzie 16:17, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think so.--Jaaari 16:24, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Examples

[edit]

With regard to this edit, opinion has been divided on the correct standard formatting, but a poll showed that most editors felt that the original (translation on the same line as the non-English) was preferrable for very short example sentences. --EncycloPetey 23:51, 1 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok. --Jaaari 09:38, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Latina

[edit]

Should Finnish be capitalised, or at latina?--Keene 16:06, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure what you are asking, but place names are capitalized while languages and nationalities are not.--Jaaari 17:12, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Korjauksesi artikkeliin you

[edit]

Pääsääntöhän on aivan niinkuin kommentissasi sanot. Mutta: muuttamasi kohdan esimerkkilause on: "You must do as I tell you". Siinä oikea käännös on "sinun". Perimmäinen pulmahan tässä on, että kieliopit kuten sanojen merkityksetkään harvoin menevät 1:1 kielestä toiseen. Olen ymmärtänyt, että pääsääntönä pitäisi kirjoittaa viittauksena näkyviin kaikki oikeat käännöstavat ja selittää (tässä tapauksessa) sinun -artikkelisssa, milloin "you" tulee kääntää sillä tavalla. Hekaheka 13:41, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Jees. Rollbäkkiä siis. --Jaaari 15:22, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

fixing # in various L4 sections

[edit]

Just out of curiosity: how are you finding these? Robert Ullmann 12:56, 19 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I ran this SQL query on my local copy of enwiktionary db dump:
SELECT *
FROM `tmp`
WHERE `text` LIKE '%====\n#%'
--Jaaari 13:00, 19 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I see, thank you. AF fixes this case, but doesn't screen for it, so it only finds them at random. Robert Ullmann 13:05, 19 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

BP discussion that may be of interest

[edit]

There's a BP discussion on Hebrew that may be of interest to you as a Finnish-entry author. See Wiktionary:Beer parlour#Treatment_of_other_types_of_compound_terms if you're interested.—msh210 17:32, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Categorizing

[edit]

I don't know if you're aware of this, but there is currently a rather massive undertaking to categorize every entry on Wiktionary (taking place at Wiktionary:Categorizing). I noticed that a lot of your recent creations (which are very sincerely appreciated) do not have any categories, and I would like to ask if you could start categorizing entries you create from now on, either by using {{infl}}, one of the templates listed at Category:German inflection templates, or simply adding the category Category:German nouns, etc. manually. Thanks very much. -Atelaes λάλει ἐμοί 04:26, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

No problem. --Jaaari 11:00, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

m:Wiktionary/logo/refresh/voting

[edit]

I do not want to come across as contumelious but please consider casting your vote for the tile logo as—besides using English—the book logo has a clear directionality of horizontal left-to-right, starkly contrasting with Arabic and Chinese, two of the six official UN languages. As such, the tile logo is the only translingual choice left and it was also elected in m:Wiktionary/logo/archive-vote-4. Global account

[edit]

Hi Jaaari! As a Steward I'm involved in the upcoming unification of all accounts organized by the Wikimedia Foundation (see m:Single User Login finalisation announcement). By looking at your account, I realized that you don't have a global account yet. In order to secure your name, I recommend you to create such account on your own by submitting your password on Special:MergeAccount and unifying your local accounts. If you have any problems with doing that or further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Cheers, DerHexer (talk) 18:18, 14 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Finglish

[edit]

Hi, are you really the owner of sanakirja.org, as you say on your user page? In that case it's even more surprising that you added a word that is in no dictionary I can find or any at onelook.com or any book scanned by Google Books. Did you come up with that Finglish by translating or is it from an unreliable source from which you perhaps imported other entries? --Espoo (talk) 10:22, 4 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
