(Can we date this quote?)

Usage

To be placed after #* , which begins a citation.

The request is not for the author’s dates, but for the publication date, preferably the earliest publication date of the quotation.

Citations that lack the publication date often also lack other bibliographic information about the quotation such as the author, the title of the work, the page on which the quotation appears, and sufficient context to make clear the correctness of the definition. The last deficiency can, and sometimes must, be corrected by including a link to the page of an online publication of the citation.
