Teochew Peng'im Problem

@Justinrleung I discovered an issue with Teochew Peng'im with nasal initials, such as for 暝. Some sources spell it as "mên5" (新編潮州音字典 1997) and some spell it as "mê5" (新潮汕字典 2010). It seems that they transcribe the same thing. I think it's better to write it as "mê5" so that it's the same as POJ where you don't put a nasal final anymore when the initial is nasal. @Mar vin kaiser: For this, I've been following czyzd, which seems to follow 新編潮州音字典. I don't think the situation in Teochew in how nasal initials interact with vowels is entirely the same as with Hokkien dialects, but I agree that mê and mên are not contrastive. @Justinrleung: Oh yeah, the module that we use for Teochew also generates slightly different IPA transcriptions for both. For mê5, it shows /me⁵⁵/, but for mên5, it's /mẽ⁵⁵/. Regardless of Peng'im spelling, it should be just /me⁵⁵/, right? --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 02:25, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
