[edit]Uncertain. Possibly continuing Proto-Indo-European *yeh₁- (“to last, to protract”) with the extension *-lós. Potential cognates include Latvian jêls, Lithuanian jė̃las, and indirectly Proto-Germanic *īdalaz.
