[edit]Of onomatopoeic origin from Proto-Indo-European *bew- or possibly *bʰewH- (“to grow”) + *-čati. Cognate with Lithuanian baũkti (“to roar”), Sanskrit बुक्कति (bukkati, “to bark”).
