From Proto-Indo-European *pr̥-sth₂-o-m (“tip”),[1][2] from *per- +‎ *steh₂- (“to stand (up)”) +‎ *-om. Compare also Sanskrit पृष्ठ (pṛṣṭhá, “back”).
