Etymology

[edit]

First attested as Piepenree around 1650. Etymology uncertain. The first element may be Pieper (a surname). However, the oldest attestation of the toponym suggests that it is derived from Middle Dutch ree (boundary) or dialectal rie (ditch).

See also Dutch Low Saxon Pieperi'je.
