Irish
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- Mumha (archaic)
Etymology
[edit]From Old Irish Mumain, dative of Mumu (“Munster”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Proper noun
[edit]Mumhain f (genitive Mumhan)
Usage notes
[edit]- Always preceded by the definite article (An Mhumhain) outside of set phrases. Unusually for a proper noun, the genitive is always left unlenited after cúige (“province”), thus Cúige Mumhan, in contrast to Connachta (“Connacht”), which is always lenited in the genitive (thus Cúige Chonnacht (“Province of Connacht”)).
