Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as hasbenni in the 10th or 11th century. Potentially a compound of Proto-Germanic *Hasiz (“Hessians”) and Old Dutch banna (“legal district”). An alternative hypothesis posits a derivation from a compound of Old Dutch *hasi (“brushwood”) and been (“pasture”). Compare Haspengouw, Neerhespen and Overhespen.
