[edit]From Middle High German hantslac, from Old High German hantslac, hantslag, hantaslag, from Proto-West Germanic *handuslagi, from Proto-Germanic *handuslagiz. Equivalent to Hand (“hand”) + Schlag (“blow, hit”). Cognate with Dutch handslag, Danish håndslag, Swedish handslag.
