German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German gīge, from Old High German gīga. Possibly from Proto-Germanic *gīganą (“to move, wish, desire”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeyǵʰ-, *gʰeygʰ- (“to yawn, gape, long for, desire”). Alternatively an independent onomatopoeic formation.
