Old Spanish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Latin -ellam, accusative of -ella.
Pronunciation
[edit]Suffix
[edit]-iella (masculine -iello)
- (added to feminine nouns and adjectives) A diminutive suffix.
Usage notes
[edit]Some Old Spanish terms apparently suffixed with -iello may actually be direct descendants of Latin diminutives formed with -ellus, and will therefore not have a corresponding non-diminutive form:
- manziella (“blemish”), from Late Latin macella, not a diminutive of *manza
