Etymology

Inherited from Latin -āculum. Partly from the Latin instrument noun suffix -culum in cases where it was attached to first-conjugation verb stems ending in -ā-. Partly from the Latin diminutive suffix -ulus in cases where it was attached to noun stems ending in -āc- (e.g. loquāculusloquāx).
