Origin unclear. Possibly borrowed from Middle Chinese 馬術 (mˠaX ʑiuɪt̚, literally horse + technique); compare Min Nan reading bé-su̍t.

Alternatively, a Japanese coinage as a compound of Chinese-derived elements (ba, horse) +‎ (jutsu, technique).
