  1. (archaic) languages of the non-Han people in northwestern and northern China

    Jiāngyán suī shàn Tiānzhúyǔ, wèi bèi xiǎo Hàn. Qí suǒ chuányán huò dé Húyǔ. Huò yǐ yì chū yīn. [Pinyin]
    Though Jiangyan was talented in Sanskrit, he did not possess a thorough understanding of Chinese. Some of his words were rendered in the Hu language, while others were transliterated.
