Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unknown. The connection with Sanskrit व्याघ्र (vyāghra, “tiger”) is untenable for formal reasons. Wackernagel hesitatingly supposed that a neuter ὦχρος (ôkhros) replaced an older *ὦχος (*ôkhos), like αἶσχος (aîskhos) to αἰσχρός (aiskhrós) and ψῦχος (psûkhos) to ψυχρός (psukhrós).
Pronunciation
[edit]- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /ɔː.kʰrós/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /oˈkʰros/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /oˈxros/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /oˈxros/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /oˈxros/
