From ἐφελκύω (ephelkúō, to draw to oneself, appeal, attract) +‎ -σῐς (-sis). έφελκύω is a variant of ἐφέλκω (ephélkō, to draw in; bring on; drag, pull towards; amass, attract; trail after), from ἐπῐ- (epi-, on, upon, at, near) +‎ ἕλκω (hélkō, to draw, drag, pull on).
