ဗိုက်

Etymology

[edit]

According to STEDT, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *d-puːk (belly; vitals; hollow object; cave), whence Old Chinese (OC *puɡ, “belly, abdomen”). However, the -uik final suggests a borrowing from Mon; as noted on the page for the Chinese term, similar words exist in Mon-Khmer, suggesting an areal relation or a very deep inheritance past the point of reconstructability.
