Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀲𑁂 (se), from Sanskrit সঃ (saḥ, he, nominative masculine singular 3rd-person pronoun) or possibly from (sa) +‎ (i, demonstrative). Cognate with Assamese সি (xi), Odia ସେ (se) and Maithili 𑂮𑂵 (se).
